Highways England will be considering overhauling the Girton Interchange as part of their plans for 2025-2030 national road improvements thanks to lobbying efforts from Anthony Browne MP and Cambridgeshire County Council.
Following a meeting with Baroness Vere, Minister for Roads, Highways England confirmed that they will look again at the case for Girton Interchange to be converted to an all-ways as part of the Route Strategies process for the next Roads Investment Strategy.
There is currently no eastbound access to the M11 from the A14 or the A428, with drivers forces to travel down the A1303 Madingley Road, which gets heavily congested in rush hours, to access the motorway. The M11 remains accessible from the A14 westbound via the interchange.
An all-ways junction would allow cars, buses, and lorries to drive continuously between the A428 and M11, cutting down on congestion.
Highways England will begin developing plans for 2025-30 in the coming months, with the process expected to take several years to come to fruition.
Anthony Browne, MP for South Cambridgeshire, said “We need to make sure gridlock does not become a way of life for residents who rely on this junction. Work on this junction is long overdue, and as the government commits to building a Britain with world-class infrastructure, we must ensure Cambridgeshire is able to level up too.
I am committed to making the Girton interchange accessible from all directions and look forward to working with Highways England and Cambridgeshire County Council to get this project moving again.”
