I am incredibly proud that South Cambridgeshire is a net contributor to the UK economy, and that comes with growth as a natural consequence. Unfortunately, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s leaders are accelerating housebuilding to the point where they will concrete over much of the district. This is an active decision on their part to build thousands more houses than the national government has suggested. By choosing the bulldozer and the concrete mixer over nature, trees, and quality of life, South Cambridgeshire District Council has declared war on our way of life and our environment, music to the ears of the developers who have spent many hours and tens of thousands of pounds lobbying our local council leadership.
There is no expectation from Westminster that they launch such a housebuilding bonanza, and I have repeatedly urged South Cambridgeshire District Council to keep housebuilding low and sustainable. I will continue to fight for our countryside against this threat to the unique rural character which makes the constituency so popular in the first place.
We must not concrete over South Cambridgeshire. That is why I am currently working on:
- opposing the gigantic commitment to 49,000 new houses and flats in SCDC Local Plan
- listening to residents, including continuing my surveys of residents on an annual basis
- ensuring the OxCam Arc is completely abandoned, and that it does not provide housebuilders with a charter for development in our area
- making sure that Thakeham abandons its reckless and unsustainable plan for a huge new settlement in South Cambridgeshire
- continuing my work in defeating the 'New Town' mentioned in the 2020 budget, which has since been removed after my campaign
- seeking a new method of delegation that gives communities a real voice in planning policy
